elzr: Thinking through Google

Yeah. I had a couple of cases recently. Couldn’t remember the names of the muppets that used to criticize from the balcony, but “muppets” plus “balcony” immediately pulled up Statler and Waldorf.

More impressive, I wanted to make reference to Cameo’s Word Up, but couldn’t remember either the name of the band or song. Yet googling “Codpiece” and “eighties” returned the video as the first hit.

It’s very much like having a hyper-efficient offline storage of the more obscure parts of memory. Where the frequently-used links become sparser, threadbare tendrils drifting in the ooze of barely encoded pop culture desiderata, googling those last, lost links is like injecting serotonin into the affected areas. But does the reliance on Google cause this decay to accelerate? Since I’ve had a cell phone, I’ve more or less lost the ability to remember new telephone numbers…
